NHRC Responds to Sharmistha Panoli's Situation
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has intervened in the case of Instagram influencer Sharmistha Panoli. Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the NHRC, announced that notices have been issued to the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Secretary of West Bengal. Both officials have been instructed to ensure Sharmistha's safety.
Complaint Filed by Legal Rights Observatory
Kanoongo revealed that a complaint was received from an organization named Legal Rights Observatory regarding a law student. The complaint alleges that the West Bengal police arrested the student from Haryana at midnight due to an objectionable social media post. It was claimed that proper legal procedures were not followed during her arrest and transit, violating the law as Sharmistha was taken to Kolkata.
Threats from Extremists
The complaint further states that Sharmistha has been receiving threats from extremists, including calls for violence and sexual assault, raising serious concerns about her safety. There is a fear that she could be harmed at any moment.
Instructions for Ensuring Sharmistha's Safety
In response to the complaint, Kanoongo mentioned that notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary and DGP of West Bengal, directing them to ensure the safety of Sharmistha Panoli, who is currently imprisoned in Alipore Jail.
Clarification Sought from Haryana Government
He also indicated that the Haryana government has been asked for clarification regarding the entire incident. The government is questioned about whether all legal protocols were adhered to during the arrest. Further actions will be determined based on the responses from the Haryana government and other relevant parties.
